South Florida is known for warm and  sunny weather year round BUT we do experience some short-lived cold weather in the winter months. The Polar Weather trend has send temperatures plummeting here and as we humans bundle up to stay warm, rodents look for shelter from the chill!

Rodents seek warmth - they can find spaces as small as a quarter to sneak inside homes. Rodents can also hide in in plants, which many people bring inside during cold spells.

Rodents gain access to homes, creating property damage, contaminating food sources, triggering allergies and, in some cases, causing illness and disease. They are responsible for an estimated 25% of house fires because they chew electrical wires with their constant gnawing.

Roaches and Allergy/Asthma - A MUST Read for Parents

In a recent survey of allergists from across the United States, 97% of respondents said they believe a pest-free home is an important step in preventing asthma and allergy symptoms.

The survey, conducted jointly by the National Pest Management Association and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, revealed that aside from dust mites, cockroaches are the most problematic household pest for patients suffering from asthma or allergies. Rounding out the top three allergy-inflaming pests are rodents and stinging insects.

First reported back in the 1940s, cockroach allergies are most common in urban areas. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates 23% to 60% of urban residents with asthma are sensitive to the cockroach allergen.
Cockroaches are one of the oldest and most adaptable pests pest professionals are asked to eliminate from homes and businesses.

A cockroach’s food tastes can be described accurately in one word – all-encompassing. Cockroaches eat just about anything including decaying matter such as food, garbage, feces and the like. They also enjoy strength in numbers; did you know a female German cockroach and her offspring can produce over 30,000 little cockroaches in one year.  So, the sighting of one cockroach is nothing to sneeze at!
The allergens these filthy pests leave behind in homes linger in the air or settle in house dust. They become airborne when the air is stirred up by movement like children playing or running through the house.

Aesop, it seems, was literally right in his 2,500-year-old fable of the country mouse and the city mouse. The cousins who exchange visits, after which each returns home gratefully from his relative’s strange haunts, has been retold ever since as a metaphor for the profound changes urbanization brought to human life. Cities have always offered more of everything—opportunity and variety, stress and danger. It’s only recently, though, that it’s become clear this is no metaphor: Humans are not the only creatures to have been altered in behaviour, and even in form, by urban experience.

We may think we’ve created a barrier between human and wild, writes Diane Ackerman in The Human Age, her sweeping portrayal of just how thoroughly humanity has refashioned the world. But city species abound, “because urban animals (including humans) vary their habits and psychology to adjust.”

A street department worker in Wichita Falls, Texas, was stung more than 1,000 times by killer bees Thursday July 24
The bees also attacked two of the man's coworkers who tried to help him.
The worker was mowing a lawn when he was attacked. He was in good condition at a local hospital.
The average adult can tolerate about 10 stings per pound of body weight, so an adult could withstand more than 1,100 stings, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
City officials say the bees were Africanized honey bees, also known as killer bees.
Africanized honey bees attack in great numbers and will chase someone up to a quarter mile, according to the Smithsonian Institution.
